Concrete Expansion Plans

Earlier this year Rocla was awarded a significant contract to provide pre-stressed concrete decking for the upgrade to the Hay Point coal terminal in Queensland. During the 16-month long project, Rocla will supply main contractor, Bechtel, with 2,000 pre-stressed concrete decks, each measuring between seven and 24 metres in length.

The combination of this large-scale supply requirement and the fast-growing need for products to support the infrastructure of Queensland's resource boom has led Rocla to embark on a new project of its own. The work involves the expansion of Rocla's Mackay Factory, and will ultimately see production capacity for pre-stressed concrete at the site triple.

Initial work on the expansion began in mid-2011, and amongst the additional facilities being installed are two new, 60-metre long stressing moulds, each able to take two 24-metre long decks at a time, a 60-metre-long water curing area and two 32 tonne overhead cranes.

Work on the extension is advancing at speed, with the foundation slab poured in late-November. The project is due for completion in February 2012.
