Rocla’s relationship with ARTC on track

Rocla’s ability to ensure certainty of supply, competitive pricing and products made to exact specification has led to an ongoing relationship with Australia Rail Track Corporation (ARTC).

Rocla has been working closely with ARTC since winning a tender in 2006 to supply 1.35 million sleepers for the upgrade of the Melbourne to Brisbane line. This contract gave Rocla the opportunity to show ARTC the quality of both product and service and, since then, additional contracts have been awarded.

“Rocla has played a key role in ARTC’s investment strategy to improve train speeds and reduce transit times in the Interstate and Hunter Valley rail networks. Considerable efforts were made to deliver sleepers, often under tight timeframes, to supply up to five major contractors installing them in Eastern Australia,” says Ian McDonald, General Manager Procurement and Contracts for ARTC.

“These projects have been a considerable success from ARTC’s perspective and the staff at Rocla who have been involved in this project should be proud of their achievement, and to be a part of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the national rail network,” he says.

To date, Rocla has supplied ARTC sleepers that suit 60 kg and 47 kg rail fastening systems, level crossing sleepers, guardrails and termination sets to deliver almost 2.8 million  sleepers.

The most recent project to leave the Grafton Factory was for approximately 98,000 sleepers for the Gunnedah to Narrabri concrete re-sleepering project in the Hunter Valley. This is part of ARTC’s Hunter Valley Corridor Capacity Strategy, raising the axle load capacities of the track from 25 ton to 30 ton.

The project was delivered by rail over a 14 week period, from January to May 2013. The 30 ton axle load Heavy Duty Fastclip  sleepers, with FC1509 Pandrol Fastclip system, were designed and developed by Rocla to meet ARTC’s particular specifications.
