Improved protection for Darlington Point

Images

In the first stage of the Darlington Point Levee Bank, part of the Darlington Point Floodplain Management Project intended to provide upgraded flood protection to Darlington Point. Rocla has supplied 500 MassBloc® Retaining Wall Units along with 60m of 225mm slotted Plastream® Steel Reinforced Pipe for a retaining wall to reinforce the Murrumbidgee river bank during flood events.

The Rocla Plastream® Pipe drains excess water which can build up behind the wall. “Using 225mm Plastream® Pipe was a smarter alternative to installing 100mm slotted pipe as it dissipates water quicker and better, while installation is easier as there is no need for a sock,” said Adrian Emer, Sales Representative for Rocla.

The second largest river in Australia and a major tributary of the Murray River within the Murray-Darling basin, the Murrumbidgee River runs for 1600 kms through Murrumbidgee Shire.

The improvements were commissioned by the Murrumbidgee Shire Council and are in response to a significant flood event at Darlington Point in March 2012 where the river peaked at 7.7m, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents and inflicting millions of dollars worth of damage.

Darlington Point is a small town on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in the Riverina district of western NSW. It is part of the Murrumbidgee Shire local government area.
