Multi-Plate™ arch structure handles the load at Mangoola Mine

When mine developer Xstrata engaged Downer EDI Engineering to design and construct a 506m reclaim tunnel and associated headwalls for an open cut coal operation at Mangoola mine NSW, Atlantic Civil’s* Multi-Plate™ corrugated structural steel plate was chosen as the most cost effective and efficient solution to meet the specified clearance envelope, cover and load requirements.

The HA42, 5000mm span Multi-Plate™ arch structure with 3557mm rise profile structure was constructed using curved and pre-punched plates, locally  manufactured in accordance with AS2041:2002, with sinusoidal 200mm pitch by 55mm depth corrugations, bolted together by 20mm diameter high strength bolts to create the nominated arch profile. Design requirements specified 1:30 fall for drainage and ability to handle heavy loads imposed by the 25m coal stockpile and CAT D11R dozer (GVM104.6T).

“The biggest convenience offered by the Multi-Plate™ arch structure is the almost infinite number of geometries that can be created simply by adjusting the number of modules in the periphery of the shape or alternatively adjusting the curving radius,” said Sonia Tokyurek, National Sales Manager for Atlantic Civil.
Atlantic Civil Multi-Plate™ arch structures come complete with installation manual, footing reactions, tool kit, general arrangement drawings and access to an experienced technical team and the assurance of dealing with a reputable company.

Atlantic Civil also designed and supplied 500m2 of precast mechanical stabilised earth retaining headwalls. The arch headwall was constructed using a variety of precast panels, ranging from 743mm to 2267mm in height including 33 special cut panels.
