Rocla’s Cairns-based manufacturing teams had their work cut out for them, supplying large quantities of pre-stressed, pre-cast bridge piles and pre-cast reinforced earth walls to meet the construction programme for the local Bruce Highway Upgrade.
The design and construct project, delivered by the BMD Albem Joint Venture, consisted of approximately 3.4 kilometres of road works, including six bridges and supporting stormwater infrastructure.
Nearly 5,000 square metres of reinforced earth wall panels were needed to create 10 unique walls; every panel was identified individually for traceability purposes and inspected to ensure quality specifications were met.
“Ensuring timely supply of the bridge piles and the wall panels were significant milestones for the production teams working on this project. Some of the bridge decks units had to be delivered at night and in the rain – as late as 3.30am – to keep up with the programme, and this required a significant logistical effort, as well as increased personnel at the factory end,” says Russell Lawrence, Area Manager for Rocla.
Russell says that, having supplied the same contractor in a previous joint venture for delivery of the Tully Alliance Project (2007 to 2009), the Rocla Cairns team was pleased once again to be able to work with BMD and Albem.
Feedback from the Contractor was very positive.
“Once again, Rocla Cairns has delivered high quality products, to suit our construction programme. All bridges were critical path on this project, so delivery of conforming prestress products on time was paramount to project success. Rocla Cairns have never let us down on this project or previous ones – they are a pleasure to deal with,” said Jeff Hughes, Construction Manager for the BMD Albem Joint Venture.
